Bet the High-Upside Underdog
In contradiction to the point made above, the “Notorious” Conor McGregor could be getting ready to shock the world when the MMA fighter faces Mayweather in a boxing super-fight set for August 26. Simply put, a lot of those people betting against McGregor simply don’t know what they’re talking about.
Yes, the UFC’s “Champ-Champ” is 0-0 in boxing, but he is also 21-3 overall in MMA and 9-1 inside the UFC’s octagon. Because McGregor is an MMA fighter, boxing media don’t see him as having much of a chance because McGregor will simply be in a striking match-up and the Irishman won’t have multiple disciplines to help him win the fight.
The thing is, even though he has had the option of turning to different things to win, McGregor has always been a boxer, only the fighting area will be different.
MMA fighters are also getting more and more accustomed to stance-switching, which creates different angles that their opponents are not expecting attacks to come from. Additionally, although Mayweather is 49-0, it was pointed out by the UFC President Dana White that Mayweather has age working against him and that he has struggled with southpaws (McGregor.)
As mentioned above, McGregor should know what fighting style to expect. In a similar blog post about MMA betting tips, Holly “The Preacher’s Daughter” Holm shocked the world when she delivered big by giving “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey her first loss.
She won because, looking back through Rousey’s career, she was actually a fairly one-dimensional fighter and the Jackson-Wink camp and those that bet on Holm that night noticed a routine, noticed what she always goes to and the same could be said about Mayweather (run-fighting and clinch work.) Again, just do your research and the odds can prove to be a bit misleading.
Target a Specific Fight
If you are more of a casual bettor just wagering on a boxing event with your friends and you simply don’t want to have a notebook’s work of info on a given card. There are ways to do as the subheading suggests and just focus on a single fight.
You can place an overall moneyline bet to pick the winner outright (like in the Mayweather-McGregor bout in the section above.) The other option is to place an over/under bet. This would simply concern the length of time a fight lasts (example: 5.5 rounds) and you wouldn’t need to know who wins.
A third path that could be taken would be to pursue a proposition line (prop) bet. There can be multiple props on any given fight. For example, a pre-fight pro could be if a fighter will miss weight or not (as was mentioned in the MMA blog) or for the Mayweather-McGregor fight, two are “will a rematch take place” and will a rematch take place in an octagon (MMA.)
These avenues give bettors a variety of options.
Parlay Betting
Parlay betting essentially takes the point made above and combines all of those side-bets into one wager (example: $200 on Mayweather to win and $200 on the fight ending by way of a unanimous decision.) The catch with a bet like this however is that whatever conditions are place on a fight, such as the ones in the example, the all must occur. This is an all-or-nothing bet.
Method of Victory Betting
This is exactly what you think it is and is possibly the second-most-important type of bet because it is not only tied to picking a specific winner like the traditional money line bet, but takes an educated guess at how that winner will get the job done.
For example, it has been mentioned time and time again that (while some think Mayweather might KO McGregor due to his inexperience in boxing) Mayweather has not scored a stoppage victory since 2011. So, the heavy favorite in all of his fights over the last few years prior to his September, 2015 retirement from the sport was for Mayweather to win by UD.
The methods to win boxing are: (Technical) Knockout, Unanimous, Majority, or Split, or Technical Decisions or a bet can also be placed on whether a fight ends by way of a draw ( Split, Majority, Technical—[injury/fouls] or Unanimous.
